The topic of body weight is so prevalent it’s triggering to many Americans. It’s not surprising; according to the CDC the US obesity prevalence was 42.4% in 2017 – 2018. From 1999 –2000 through 2017 –2018, US obesity prevalence increased from 30.5% to 42.4%. This is paramount because obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. These are among the leading causes of preventable, premature death. Of the people who have died with Covid-19 in the US, 94% of them had an average of 3.8 co-morbidities, the dominant pre-existing condition of these is obesity. What we want everyone to understand regarding this topic is that the state of obesity is not caused or solved by the simple calories in/calories out approach that has been the main message for decades now.
